NIGHTWATCHING

A winter storm rages outside an old house somewhere in New England.  Inside, a mother is checking on her two young children when she hears a noise that shouldn't be there - the sound of a footstep on a creaky stair.  There's an intruder in the house.  He's between her and any means of escape and how would she get away with two children in tow?  They have to hide.  She has to get them into the tiny, secret room hidden behind a wall.  And then what?  Good, good book!  Beautifully written, chilling and breathtakingly eerie.  The characters don't even have names, but you feel everything this woman goes through.  And then, as so often happens in life, the victim is victimized even more by the investigation.  You might not want to read it if you're home alone, but read it!
