Jeep Mullane, ex-NYPD detective turned small town police chief, is present at the scene where a body has just washed up on the Long Island North Shore. The face is unrecognizable, but when Jeep sees the crossed lacrosse sticks tattooed above the ankle, he knows it's his long-time buddy, Johnny "Careless" Chambliss, one of the local elite. The powers that be want the death declared "accidental", but Jeep and the medical examiner aren't so sure. Johnny was into a lot of things and could be very secretive about some of it. Jeep unofficially tries to track Johnny's last days while officially trying to nab a car theft ring specializing in jacking the high-end rides of the entitled brethren of Long Island. And then the two cases seem to intersect. This is a short, fast-moving book. I found it a little hard to keep up. Jeep is a great character and I did enjoy the book, but things seemed to wrap up a little too neatly. Wade has a very impressive pedigree, but this is his first novel. His next one should be even better.
