In a dystopian countryside, far away from any city, Brooke and her husband, Milo, scratch out a meager existence for themselves and their two daughters.  Life is hard, but they're happy.  Until Brooke's past catches up with her.  Brooke's present family doesn't know anything about the family she grew up with or the person Brooke used to be.  But someone from the past has shown up a Brooke's home; someone who wants revenge for things done years ago and that person is unlikely to be alone.  Brooke is able to overpower him in an altercation, but must now get him to a federal marshal's office 100 miles away so she can collect the bounty and move her family somewhere safe.  At the beginning of winter.  On foot.  Great book!  The tension is palpable from beginning to end.  Brooke is a flawed heroine whose backstory is as captivating as her present.  I didn't want to put it down, even when I finished it.
