Atlanta.  Late 1940's.  The first black police officers have been hired, but it's not much of a breakthrough.  They have very limited authority and lots of rules.  The white cops are against them.  Even most of the people in the black neighborhoods they patrol are against them.  When a black girl who was last seen in the company of a white man, an ex-cop, is found dead, no one seems to care.  Except the two black officers who found her.  Against the rules and against all odds, they start their own investigation to find out who killed her.  Though the historical setting is brought to life well, the issue of race is as timely now as it was then.  A gritty, thought provoking read.
