Mia and her teenage daughter, Pearl, have just moved to Shaker Heights, a swanky Cleveland suburb. They're renting living space from the Richardsons, a local family with deep roots in the community who have four teenage children of their own. It doesn't take long before the two families are entwined in multiple ways. But then a situation arises that brings their many difference to light. A friend of Mia's, in a desperate moment, left her infant daughter at the fire station. Now that she's in a better place, she'd like to get the girl back. However, she's in the process of being adopted by a local couple, longtime friends of Mrs. Richardson. Everyone has an opinion about what turns into a very high profile case. This book was hailed by several sources as one of the best books of 2017 and I wouldn't disagree. Ng is a gifted writer who takes us inside her characters and their lives and makes us care about what happens to them.
