Vanessa goes off to boarding school, recently alienated from her best friend. She soon becomes obsessed with her overly attentive English teacher and the two embark on an affair. Vanessa is 15; Strane, the teacher, is 42. Suspicions arise and soon questions are being asked. Vanessa ends up taking the fall and is expelled, but in her mind, she did it to save the man she loves. Years pass and the two are still occasionally in contact, but when another student comes forward and accuses Strane of abuse, Vanessa must reexamine her past and her relationship with her former teacher and lover. Vanessa never sees herself as a victim, but does realize that the whole situation has had an impact on the rest of her life. A beautifully written novel about an ugly subject. This book will resonate with the #MeToo movement. Many will empathize with Vanessa while others will shake their heads and wonder "what's wrong with her?". Equally disturbing and compelling, this is an astounding debut.
