When Jo was seven, the nanny she loved more than anyone else in the world, suddenly left with no warning and no explanation.  Jo has always blamed Virginia, her aloof, aristocratic mother and has subsequently distanced herself from her both literally and figuratively.  But after Jo's husband dies and his business fails, Jo has no choice but to move herself and her daughter back in to her mother's manor house in England.  When the remains of a body are found in the lake behind the house, an investigation ensues.  Could this by the nanny?  And what does Virginia know that she isn't telling?  Told from various points of view as well as past and present, MacMillan skillfully weaves it all together in this very gothic feeling novel.
