A group of new mothers have been meeting twice a week at a park in Brooklyn when they decide it's time for a change. They're going to go out for drinks at a local bar. For some of them, it will be the first time leaving their baby with someone else. Winnie is reluctant, but the others assure her everything will be fine and a reliable babysitter is procured. But now Winnie's baby has disappeared from his crib. As the days go by, we see how the disappearance affects some of the other mothers as their lives begin to tailspin. This much-talked-about debut already has a movie in the works. I wasn't as impressed as someone must have been. Maybe I misunderstood what the book was supposed to be about. It's not really about the search for the baby and what the mother is going through. In fact, once the baby disappears, we hardly see the mother either. The story is about the other mothers, the stress they're already going through and how they are impacted by the ongoing investigation. I think calling it a "thriller" is a bit of a stretch.
