When twelve-year-old Pete befriends a wounded wolf-dog, he also becomes friends with the reclusive lady doctor who patched up the animal and Justin, who recently arrived in town with his father and who happens to be African American.  None of these friendships are easy to maintain in Texas in 1959.  Prejudice runs high in this small town and Pete's abusive dad is one of the worst offenders.  When Dr. Lucy meets Justin's dad after a vicious attack brings Justin to her doorstep, the attraction between them escalates an already volatile situation.  This is a book about four good people in unfortunate circumstances who happen to come together and improve the quality of each other's lives in a multitude of ways.  A heartwarming, feel-good read.
