Josie and her two teenage children are trapped in an abusive household. One particularly violent night, sixteen-year-old Drew, takes a gun and shoots their abuser, a well-liked local deputy sheriff. Jake Brigance finds himself appointed to defend Drew in what is sure to become a volatile situation. Though initially unhappy about the assignment, Jake goes out on a limb to save Drew from the death sentence that he could be facing. Some of Grisham's finest work has featured Jake and the other denizens of Clanton, Mississippi and this is classic Grisham. The plotting and prepping for the trial makes for reading that is as engaging as the trial itself. This courtroom drama is a hard one to put down.
