A well-liked professor and author goes on the run after his family is brutally murdered.  Of course this makes him look all the more guilty.  Ryan DeMarco, the cop looking for the professor, was an acquaintance of the man and is having a hard time believing he could have done it.  An unfinished manuscript may answer some questions, but DeMarco has to find it before it can help him find the missing suspect.  DeMarco is your stereotypical damaged cop, but he is well read.  There are a lot of literary references that could drag down the momentum of the investigation, but I didn't feel that happened here.  The author keeps you engaged even after the mystery of the initial murders is solved.
