When two young girls disappear from a strip mall parking lot in a downtrodden Pennsylvania town, their family hires a former bounty hunter from California who excels at locating people who are missing, Alice Vega.  When the local police rebuff Vega's attempt to offer her assistance, she teams up with disgraced former detective, Max Caplan, now working as a private investigator.  Without the rules and regulations that could limit a police investigation, the pair quickly begin making headway and coming up with new leads.  But as the days pass, everyone is acutely aware that time may be running out for the missing girls.  I devoured this book.  It grabs you right from the beginning and never lets go.  The characters, even minor ones, leap off the page.  But the real jewel here is the relationship between Vega and Cap.  I like them both on their own, but their rapport, their chemistry, is a thing of beauty.  I'm sure I am not alone in hoping that this is not the last we see of them.
