When Adrienne, "Rennie", was 14, her mother, Malabar, enlisted her as confidante and conspirator as she embarked on an affair with her husband's best friend.  Never before having felt special and adored by her mother, Rennie rises to the task, having no idea as to the effects it will have on her family, her relationships and her future.  Years go by, Rennie's stepfather dies and, eventually, her mother's lover tells his wife the truth and vows to have nothing more to do with Malabar.  Unfortunately, by the time this happens, Rennie and the lover's son, Jack, have met, fallen in love and have plans to marry.  Jack knew nothing about the affair prior to this or about Rennie's role in it.  And so, an already complicated family situation becomes even more convoluted.  Rennie's story is at one captivating and confounding.  This memoir reads like a juicy beach read, especially since so much of it takes place with Cape Cod as a backdrop.  Beautifully written, moving and profound.
