WILLARD MEMORIAL LIBRARY NEWS
The Huron County Community Library offers a variety of workshops, events, and activities for all ages. Be sure to stop by the Willard location during the month of April and take part in all our various happenings.
National Library Week takes place on April 9-14. The theme this year is “Libraries Lead”. Bring in any non-perishable, non-expired item during this week to get late fees taken off your library card!! Lost or damaged item fees are not eligible. One item equals $1.00. These donated items will go to help our local food pantries.
During the month of April we will be featuring a GoPro Hero 5 for our patrons to use with staff. The kit will be here courtesy of Norweld. Come in a give it a try.
On Thursday, April 12 at 6 p.m. Nancy, the Turtle Lady, is being hosted by our Willard Library location. All ages are welcome to join us at the Willard Senior Center. Laugh and learn with the Turtle Lady as she explores the wonderful world of turtles. Guests will have plenty of “turtle-touching time” with over 20 turtles, bearded dragons, corn snakes and a few other surprise animal friends.
Android 101 is being offered in our Community Room on Thurs. Apr. 19 at 6 p.m. Come learn basic functions and use of your Android device. Please be sure to register your device beforehand and bring all passwords needed. Sign-up is required for this class.
Fran Evans will be returning on Thur. April 26 with a look at Personal Family Scrapbooking. Come take a walk back in time and relive memories & local history with Fran. Share stories, develop friendships, learn, and more. Two time slots are available for your convenience; one at 10 a.m. and also at 6 p.m.
Two “Friday Films@ Willard” are scheduled in April. On Friday, April 6, (a repeat showing) come watch as aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. Then on Friday, April 20, join us for a movie based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect a town from a historic wildfire. Both these films will be shown from 12-2 p.m.
Our Teens have special activities planned when they meet on Mondays at 4:30 p.m. On April 9 create a DIY Phone Holder, on April 16 make DIY Gummy Bears and on April 30 come for Movie Day! Watch with us as, Bruce Wayne, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.
Money Smart Week events are planned for the week of April 23. On Monday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m., all Teens are invited to brush up on their money skills by playing “Teen Monopoly”. Wednesday, April 25, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., the Youth Services Department are asking kids to drop in and play the “Allowance Game”. This will be a great time to introduce kids on how to handle their money. AARP will be here on Thursday, April 26 at 6 p.m. to present “Fraud Watch Network: Fighting Back”. Vigilance against scammers is our number one weapon. By taking a few practical steps, you have the power to protect yourself and family and stop fraud before it happens. The AARP Fraud Watch Network puts proven tools and resources right at your fingertips. This program will be held in the library Community Room.
The Willard Memorial Library location also has regular monthly events available for our patrons. “Mondays with Meg” is a book discussion group that meets in our Community Room on the 2nd Monday of every month. They are always looking for new readers so stop by and add your thoughts to this group. On Monday, April 9 at 10 a.m. the book “The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper” by Phaedra Patrick will be discussed. “Awkward Book Club with Jo” meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Study Room. On Tuesday, April 17 they will be discussing “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult. “Cook up a Storm Cookbook Club” meets in our Annex on the last Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. This month’s challenge will be on April 25 and will feature “Pinterest Recipes”! Teen Manga Club meets at the Willard City Schools on Wednesdays at 2:45 p.m. The book for April 11 will be “My Hero Academia” vol. 9 by Kohei Horikoshi and for April 25 it will be “My Hero Academia” vol. 10 by Kohei Horikoshi.
“Read to Me Story Time” is scheduled for Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. This is an early literacy program that features music, stories, crafts and more. It is a special interaction time for the little ones. April 4 and 5 the theme is “We Welcome Spring”, April 11 and 12, “I Love Books – Let’s Read”, April 18 and 19, “A Little Monkey Business”, April 25 and 26, “Under the Sea”.
Ok Kids! Let’s be creative!!! Earth Day is April 22! Come celebrate early with us on April 19 at 4 p.m. and make a special Drop-in Craft. Beginning at 4 p.m. on April 24 join us to make a Bank Craft for Money Smart Week. On April 26 at 4 p.m. stop by and create a “Hug-A-Friend Day craft.
Children’s Book Week is April 30-May 6. Stop in for Out of this World…STAR WARS FUN!! On April 30, Shawn Butler will set up his Star Wars collection in our Story Room. May the force guide you here to explore.
Movies @ the Library will take place on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. On April 3 we will watch as an aspiring musician, Miguel, is confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, and enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. On April 10, two kids find and play a magical board game, they release a man trapped for decades in it and a host of dangers that can only be stopped by finishing the game.
