Seventeen years ago, Ewert Grens was unable to solve a murder that claimed four family members, sparing only a little girl of five.  Now, with retirement looming (and dreaded), Grens is given another chance when there's a break-in at the apartment where the massacre took place and more people are turning up dead, shot in the same identifying manner as the family.  Realizing the girl's life may again be in danger, Grens is desperate to find her, but shocked when he discovers the information on her new identity is missing - from a safe deep within the police department. Grens must join forces with a man from his past - a former police informant - to solve the murders and uncover the leak within the department.  These Scandinavian crime thrillers can sometimes be hard to follow; the unpronounceable names and places can interrupt the flow.  That said, I didn't think it was a problem here.  This was quite good.  It was not a dark as this genre can be.  The pace was brisk, the characters relatable, the story smart and satisfyingly twisty.  You knew these men had met before but it didn't take anything away from this book.  You might even want to seek out those previous outings.
