Eli North is damaged goods. When he got home from Afghanistan, his career tanked, his drinking escalated and his marriage fell apart. He only has a job because the sheriff of his bucolic county, otherwise known as "Mom", hired him as a deputy for her perpetually understaffed department. Eli is struggling just to get from one day to the next when he finds a teenage boy dead in a boat and the girl who was supposed to be with him can't be found. With the help of a young FBI agent, Eli and his mother must probe the dark underbelly of their seemingly peaceful little town to find out why an innocent young man was killed. This is a pretty good book. Well crafted characters, a gripping storyline and a strong sense of place make for a compelling read. Pease is one to watch.
