A dead body, unidentifiable thanks to a shotgun blast to the face, is found in the southern Louisiana swamp. A mother is looking for her son, a supposedly recovered addict, but the local police can't be bothered to look for a grown man who most likely has simply succumbed to the lure of drugs yet again. A small-town golden boy, former football star, doesn't show up for a hunting trip with his brother and nobody in the family has heard from him for days. The general description of the body could be either one of the missing men. Is this three separate cases or are they all connected? Married sheriff's detectives, Nick and Annie, are working the cases from different angles, but in a small town, everybody knows everybody else and somebody likely isn't telling everything they know. It's been quite a while since Hoag readers have heard from Nick and Annie, so you can be forgiven if you don't really remember the circumstances of their last outing. It doesn't matter. Hoag is an excellent writer and once you start reading, this book is the only one that will matter.
